Why PG County Is Full of Great Portrait Locations

I have photographed people all over the DMV, and Prince George's County consistently delivers some of the best backdrops I have worked with. Lakeside light, historic architecture, wide open fields, urban waterfronts. It is all here, often within a 20-minute drive.

Whether you need family portraits in Upper Marlboro, engagement photos in Bowie, or professional headshots near College Park, this guide covers the locations I return to again and again. Most of them are free to use and do not require a permit.

Lake Artemesia Park

1. Lake Artemesia Natural Area

Location: Berwyn Heights/College Park

Best For: Nature portraits, engagement sessions, fitness photos

This 38-acre lake has a 1.35-mile paved trail that gives you multiple distinct backdrops in a single walk. Golden hour light bounces off the water, and the surrounding trees frame your subject naturally in every season.

  • Best Time: Sunrise or 2 hours before sunset
  • Parking: Free at 5200 Berwyn Rd
  • Crowds: Light on weekday mornings
Watkins Regional Park

2. Watkins Regional Park

Location: Upper Marlboro

Best For: Family portraits, children's photos, seasonal sessions

At 437 acres, Watkins gives you open fields, wooded areas, historic buildings, and a charming antique carousel all in one park. The Old Maryland Farm section adds rustic character that works well for fall and holiday sessions.

  • Best Time: Early morning or late afternoon
  • Parking: Multiple free lots
  • Special: Works well in all seasons
National Harbor

3. National Harbor Waterfront

Location: Oxon Hill

National Harbor gives you a polished waterfront setting with modern architecture, the Capital Wheel, and wide Potomac River views. The plaza areas provide clean, contemporary backgrounds that photograph well for corporate and engagement work.

  • Best Time: Weekday evenings for fewer crowds
  • Parking: Paid garages ($5-20)
  • Tip: Free street parking after 6 PM
Riversdale House Museum

4. Riversdale House Museum

Location: Riverdale Park

Best For: Elegant portraits, wedding photos, historic themes

This Federal-style mansion dates back to 1807 and sits on grounds with manicured gardens, brick pathways, and classic architecture. The front lawn and side gardens give you several distinct portrait setups without moving far.

  • Best Time: Spring for blooming gardens
  • Parking: Free on-site
  • Note: Check for event closures
Allen Pond Park

5. Allen Pond Park

Location: Bowie

Best For: Family sessions, maternity photos, casual portraits

Bowie's premier park has a 10-acre pond, walking trails, gardens, and the Bowie Ice Arena. You can move from waterside to wooded areas to open lawn in a single session, which makes it ideal for longer shoots with outfit changes.

Portrait Photography Tips for PG County Locations

Timing Your Session

The best light for portraits in PG County happens during golden hour, which is the hour after sunrise or before sunset. During summer, aim for sessions before 9 AM or after 6 PM. Midday sun creates harsh shadows and makes everyone squint.

Dealing with Crowds

National Harbor and Lake Artemesia draw crowds on weekends. If you want the location to yourself, go on a weekday morning or during school hours. Most parks are nearly empty before 8 AM on weekdays.

Weather Contingencies

Maryland weather shifts fast. Always have a backup plan ready.

  • Covered pavilions at Watkins and Allen Pond Parks
  • National Harbor's covered walkways and indoor areas
  • Historic house museums for indoor options
  • University buildings (check accessibility first)
