What Photography Actually Costs in Charleston and the DMV in 2026
See real 2026 pricing for graduation, portrait, headshot, and event photography in Charleston and the DMV, plus the factors that change your quote.
Photographers hide pricing behind contact forms and clients waste a week collecting quotes. Here are the ranges I see across two markets I work in, and what actually moves the number.
The ranges

The DMV runs 20 to 40 percent higher across the board. Higher cost of living, more corporate work, more competition for calendar dates during graduation season.
My own starting rates sit at the accessible end of these ranges. Headshots start at $40, portraits start at $80, graduation sessions run around $150, and event coverage runs $150 per hour. Current rates are on the services page.
What moves the price
Time on the calendar, not time shooting
A 60 minute session costs a photographer four to six hours. Drive, shoot, cull, edit, deliver, and answer emails. When you see $150 for an hour, understand that the hourly rate on the actual labor is closer to $30.
Number of delivered images
The single biggest cost driver after time. A gallery of 40 edited images takes roughly two hours in Lightroom. A gallery of 200 takes a full day. Photographers who advertise unlimited photos are either delivering unedited files or charging for it elsewhere.
Turnaround time
Standard turnaround runs 7 to 14 days. Rush delivery in 48 hours usually adds 25 to 50 percent because it means bumping other clients.
Second shooter
Adds $300 to $800 for a full day. Necessary for weddings and large events where you cannot be in two rooms at once.
Travel
Most photographers include a service radius and charge past it. Mine covers downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, James Island, Johns Island, Daniel Island, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, and Summerville. Beyond that adds a travel fee.
Permits and venue fees
Angel Oak, Boone Hall, and several DMV locations require paid photo permits. That cost passes to the client and it should be stated up front, not buried.
What clients should ask before booking
- How many edited images do I receive, and in what format?
- What is the turnaround time?
- Do I get print rights, and are RAW files included? Most photographers do not release RAWs, and that is standard.
- What is the reschedule policy for weather?
- Is there a travel fee for my location?
- Do you carry backup gear and backup card storage?
That last question separates hobbyists from working photographers. Ask it.
What photographers get wrong about pricing
Competing on price only. Undercutting the market brings clients who leave for the next person who is ten dollars cheaper. Compete on direction, turnaround, and consistency instead.
Not raising rates as the work improves. Rates should move with the portfolio. If your work at 200 sessions looks like your work at 20, the problem is not the price.
Hourly with no cap. For event work, hourly is right. For portraits, hourly invites scope creep. Price the deliverable.
Free work with no strategic reason. Free sessions make sense to build a specific portfolio gap or to get into a venue you want to shoot. They do not make sense as a general growth strategy.
Deposits and payment structure
Standard structure across both markets is 25 to 50 percent non-refundable retainer to hold the date, balance due before delivery.
The retainer is what protects the calendar. A date held without money is not held.

How much do graduation photos cost in Charleston?
Sessions run between $150 and $500 depending on session length, number of locations, and how many edited images you receive. Sessions in the DMV run higher.
Why is event photography priced hourly?
Event coverage length is set by the event, not by the photographer. Hourly pricing matches the cost to the actual commitment. Most photographers set a two hour minimum.
Is a $40 headshot too cheap to be good?
Not by itself. At that price you are usually getting a single setup, one to three edited images, and a fast turnaround. That covers most LinkedIn and résumé needs.
Do photographers give you the RAW files?
Usually no. Editing is part of the work being sold, and unedited files misrepresent the photographer. Some will license RAWs for an added fee.
How far in advance should I book graduation photos?
Four to six weeks for April and May in Charleston. Graduation season books out and the best times of day fill first.
What is a reasonable deposit for a photo session?
Between 25 and 50 percent, non-refundable, applied to the total. Anything demanding full payment weeks in advance is unusual for sessions under $500.
