Using an APS-C Fisheye on a Full Frame Sony: The TTArtisan 7.5mm Crop Mode Guide
How to shoot the TTArtisan 7.5mm f/2 fisheye on a full frame Sony A7III, when to use APS-C crop mode, and when the vignette is worth keeping.
The TTArtisan 7.5mm f/2 costs under $150 and it is designed for APS-C sensors. Mount it on a full frame A7III and you get a black circle with an image inside it.
That is not a defect. It is a choice you get to make per shot.
The two modes and when to use each
APS-C crop mode, the default
Turn on APS-C/Super 35 mode in the shooting menu. The camera reads the centre 10 megapixels of the sensor and the frame fills edge to edge with no vignette.
You get a roughly 11mm equivalent field of view with full fisheye distortion. Ten megapixels is plenty for Instagram, plenty for a web gallery, and enough for a 12 by 18 print.
Use this for anything you deliver to a client.
Full frame mode, the circular image
Leave crop mode off and the lens projects a circle onto the sensor with black corners. The circle itself is sharp.
This is a stylistic choice, not a mistake. It works for:
- Reel covers and vertical social content where the circle is the design
- Album art style portraits
- Party and event shots where the black frame reads as intentional
It does not work for delivered galleries, because clients see the black corners as a technical error no matter how you frame it.
Set APS-C mode to a custom button so you can flip between them without diving into menus.

The lens is fully manual. No autofocus, no electronic contacts, no EXIF data. That sounds like a problem and it is not, because at 7.5mm at f/5.6 everything from about 18 inches to infinity is in focus. Set the focus ring and stop touching it.
Turn on "Release without Lens" in the menu or the shutter will not fire.
Where a fisheye earns its place at an event
Most photographers buy a fisheye, shoot ten frames, and leave it in a drawer. Three uses justify carrying it.
Group shots in tight rooms. A hotel meeting room where you cannot back up far enough for 25 people. At 11mm equivalent you fit the room.
The one wide establishing shot per event. Every gallery needs a frame that shows the whole space. One image, delivered, that gives context to the other 200.
Overhead and low angle novelty. Held above a crowd or at floor level on the dance floor. Two or three of these per event, no more.
Managing the distortion
Fisheye distortion bends straight lines and stretches anything near the edge. Two rules control it.
Keep faces out of the outer 20 percent of the frame. Edge distortion widens heads and stretches limbs. Nobody is happy about it.
Keep the horizon through the centre. A horizon at the centre line stays straight. Move it up or down and it curves hard.
If you want the wide view without the bend, Lightroom's lens correction can partially defish the image. You lose resolution at the edges and gain a rectilinear look. It works well enough at 10 megapixels for web delivery.
Is it worth the money
For the price, yes, with one condition. Treat it as a specialty lens that covers a specific gap, not as a wide angle you use every session.
If you shoot events in small venues, it solves a real problem for the cost of a single portrait session. If you shoot outdoor portraits only, you will never take it out of the bag.

Can you use APS-C lenses on a full frame Sony camera?
Yes. The camera detects most APS-C lenses and switches to crop mode automatically. Fully manual lenses have no electronic contacts, so you turn crop mode on yourself.
How many megapixels do you get in APS-C crop mode on an A7III?
About 10 megapixels, down from 24. That prints cleanly to 12 by 18 inches and covers every digital delivery use.
Is the TTArtisan 7.5mm autofocus?
No. It is manual focus with a manual aperture ring and no electronic contacts. At this focal length depth of field covers most of what you need anyway.
Why does my camera not fire with a manual lens attached?
Enable "Release without Lens" in the camera menu. The camera blocks the shutter by default when it detects no lens.
Should I keep the fisheye vignette in the photo?
Only when it is deliberate and the whole image is built around it. For client galleries, shoot in crop mode.
Does a fisheye work for portraits?
For creative portraits with the subject centred, yes. For anything flattering, no. Distortion at the edges enlarges whatever is closest to the lens.
