Erica's Graduation Session at the Cistern Yard and Sottile House

The College of Charleston Cistern Yard is one of those locations that never gets old. The live oaks, the Spanish moss, the brick pathways — it's the backdrop that defines CofC, and it's where almost every graduate wants at least one photo. But the best graduation sessions don't stop at the Cistern.

For Erica's graduation portrait session, we shot at both the Cistern Yard and Sottile House, giving her a gallery that covered the full range of what downtown Charleston's campus has to offer. The Cistern brought the classic, natural Southern feel. Sottile House brought the architecture and drama. Together, they made for one of my favorite CofC graduation shoots this season.

Why the Cistern Yard Is Charleston's Most Iconic Graduation Photo Spot

The Cistern Yard has been the heart of College of Charleston since the 1800s. The massive live oaks create a natural canopy that filters light beautifully for portraits, and the Spanish moss adds texture and depth that no studio backdrop can replicate. It's the reason CofC holds commencement here — and the reason every graduate needs photos in this spot.

Shooting at the Cistern Yard: What to Expect

The Cistern Yard at College of Charleston sits right in the middle of campus on St. Philip Street. It's a public space, so there will be people around — students, tourists, families. That's part of the charm. Here's how I make sure graduation portraits here still feel intentional and clean:

  • Timing matters: We scheduled Erica's session in the early morning when foot traffic was light and the light was soft under the oaks
  • Use the depth: The Cistern is deeper than it looks. Shooting further back into the yard with a wide aperture blurs the background and isolates the subject
  • Work the angles: The brick walkways create natural leading lines, and the tree trunks provide framing opportunities throughout the yard
  • Capture the details: The moss, the bricks, the ironwork — close-up shots of Erica's cap, stole, and regalia against these textures add variety to the gallery

Sottile House: Adding Architectural Drama to Graduation Portraits

Sottile House is a two-minute walk from the Cistern, and the contrast it provides is exactly why I recommend it for every CofC graduation session. Where the Cistern is organic and natural, Sottile House is structured and grand. The columns, the stairs, and the symmetrical facade give graduation portraits a formal, elevated feel.

For Erica's session, we used the front steps for wide-angle shots that showed the full building, then moved to the side columns for tighter portraits with clean, architectural lines. The building faces east, so morning light wraps around the columns and creates beautiful directional lighting without harsh shadows.

Gear Setup for CofC Campus Graduation Photography

Camera: Sony A7IV — reliable autofocus for shooting in the dappled light under the Cistern oaks

Primary Lens: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 — wide enough for environmental shots at Sottile House, tight enough for portraits at the Cistern

Light: Almost entirely natural light for this session. The Cistern's tree canopy and Sottile House's architecture provide natural diffusion and direction

Backup: Godox V1 Pro for fill flash if needed during midday sessions or overcast conditions

What to Wear for College of Charleston Graduation Photos

Erica nailed her outfit choice, and it made a real difference in the final images. Here's what works best for graduation photos at College of Charleston:

  • Under the gown: A solid-colored dress or outfit that looks polished when the gown is open or off. White, black, and jewel tones photograph beautifully against the Cistern's green backdrop
  • Shoes matter: Your feet will be in frame. Choose shoes you're comfortable walking in — we cover a lot of ground between locations — but that also look good on camera
  • Accessories: Stoles, cords, honor society regalia — bring everything. These details tell your story and add color to the portraits
  • Hair and makeup: The Charleston humidity is real. Plan accordingly, and consider scheduling hair and makeup before the session rather than relying on it lasting all day

Planning Your Own CofC Graduation Photo Session

If you're graduating from College of Charleston and want professional portraits at the Cistern Yard and Sottile House, here's what I recommend:

  • Book early: Spring graduation season is my busiest time for Charleston graduation photography. Slots fill up fast, especially weekend mornings
  • Plan for 1-2 hours: This gives us time to shoot at both locations without feeling rushed
  • Bring a friend or family member: Having someone there helps you relax and creates natural, candid moments between posed shots
  • Be open to exploring: The CofC campus is full of hidden spots — wrought iron gates, garden courtyards, cobblestone alleys. Some of the best shots happen between locations
