Charleston Graduation

You get one week to photograph four years

Graduation week in Charleston is short, crowded, and unforgiving with light. The job is to come back with portraits that hold up on a wall for decades, and that means planning the session before the day arrives rather than hoping for the best.

  • A planned route so you are not losing session time to downtown parking
  • A backup location for every primary spot, because campus gates close
  • Regalia handling that keeps white gowns from blowing out in Charleston sun
  • Solo, family, and friend group frames in the same booking

What a session includes

  • 1 to 2 Charleston locations
  • 30 or more retouched images
  • Cap, gown, stole, and cord portraits
  • Solo frames plus family and friend groups
  • Location planning and a timing plan sent in advance
  • Private online gallery with high resolution downloads

Sessions start at $150. Most Charleston graduation sessions land between $150 and $600 depending on time, number of locations, group size, and delivery speed.

Graduation photos by campus

Each Charleston school has its own regalia, its own traditions, and its own access rules. Here is how sessions usually run.

Where to shoot in Charleston

These are the locations that consistently deliver, and the reason each one earns its place in a session.

  • Cistern Yard — live oaks, Spanish moss, and Randolph Hall. The definitive CofC frame.
  • Waterfront Park and the Pineapple Fountain — open water light and a landmark that reads instantly as Charleston.
  • Rainbow Row — the color block everyone wants. Only works early, before the crowds.
  • The Battery and White Point Garden — oaks, ironwork, and harbour views in one short walk.
  • Hampton Park — the greenest option, and the easiest parking downtown.
  • Colonial Lake and Philip Simmons gates — quieter alternatives when the classics are packed.

Timing, honestly

Charleston sits far enough south that midday sun is harsh most of the graduation calendar, and white regalia is the hardest thing in photography to hold detail in. The hour after sunrise and the ninety minutes before sunset are not a stylistic preference here, they are what keeps a gown from turning into a white shape.

Early morning has a second advantage nobody thinks about until they arrive: Rainbow Row and The Battery are empty. In May, that is the difference between your portraits and your portraits plus forty strangers.

Charleston graduation photography FAQ

How much does a graduation photographer cost in Charleston?

Sessions start at $150 and most land between $150 and $600. The lower end covers a short solo session at one location. The higher end covers more time, more locations, family and friend groups, a larger set of retouched images, or rush delivery during the busy May and December weeks.

When should I book Charleston graduation photos?

Four to six weeks before graduation week. May and December are the two busiest stretches of the Charleston year and weekend golden hour slots go first. If you are shooting in regalia before the ceremony, book as soon as your pickup date is confirmed.

Can we photograph at Cistern Yard?

Yes, and it is the most requested backdrop in the city. Cistern Yard is an active campus space, so access varies around commencement setup and college events. I plan a primary time plus a backup at Porters Lodge, Randolph Hall, or the Glebe Street gates, so a closed gate never costs you the session.

What is the best time of day for graduation photos in Charleston?

The hour after sunrise or the ninety minutes before sunset. Charleston midday sun is bright and high-contrast, and white regalia blows out under it. Early morning also means empty streets at Rainbow Row and The Battery.

How many locations can we cover in one session?

One to two comfortably. Downtown parking and walking time between landmarks is the real constraint, not shooting time. Cistern Yard plus Waterfront Park, or The Battery plus Rainbow Row, work well because each pair is a short walk apart.

When will I get my photos?

Galleries are delivered within 7 days, with rush delivery available when you need images for announcements, party invitations, or a print deadline.

Can you photograph a group of graduating friends?

Yes. Roommate, sorority, fraternity, and student organization groups are a regular part of graduation season. Group sessions need a slightly longer booking so everyone gets solo frames as well as the group set, and splitting the cost usually makes it the cheapest way for everyone to get portraits.

Other Charleston sessions

Graduation is often booked alongside something else. These pages cover the rest.
